Rock icon Morrissey will be joined by one of his influences, Blondie, in New York on his latest tour of the United States.

The famously gloomy British singer, who last year canceled US shows due to illness, on Friday announced 17 new dates around the United States starting on June 11 in New Orleans.

On June 27, he will play the prestigious venue of New York’s Madison Square Garden with Blondie as the opening act.

Blondie emerged in the New York punk scene in the 1970s and became an underground sensation through the band’s hard-edged pop, eventually winning mainstream success with songs such as “Heart of Glass” and “Call Me.”

Blondie’s lead singer Debbie Harry, 69, is winding down a residency of cabaret-style shows at New York’s Cafe Carlyle, best known for its weekly clarinet performances by Woody Allen.

Morrissey, the former lead singer of The Smiths, has won a global cult following through his dark wit and poetic tales of life’s tribulations.

He has appeared to be back in good health and recently toured Europe after revealing treatment for cancer.

Morrissey has often tapped his musical heroes for concerts, with punk godmother Patti Smith opening for him in 2013 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

He is also a staunch animal rights defender and insists that venues go vegetarian during his concerts.
