Debbie Harry in support of Blondie biopic
This year's Godlike Genius says the film would help people have a "finer appreciation" for the band

Blondie frontwoman Debbie Harry has spoken out in support of a Blondie biopic, stating that a film about the band would help people have a “finer appreciation” of them.
Speaking about the possibility of a film, the singer continued by saying that it could help the public be more “informed”. “It’s difficult. You can only really skim the surface. If it’s good entertainment, honest, well-acted and directed? Maybe,” she replied when asked about her thoughts on the matter. “I think many people could be informed and have a finer appreciation of the person or era.”
Harry then went on to state that, if the film were to be made, she would not have a lot of documentation to draw on regarding the band’s illustrious career to date. Talking about whether she had ever kept a diary to Stylist magazine, she said: “Unfortunately not. I wish that I had. My impressions will simply be that, impressions. It’s funny, someone will say something and then a memory will come flashing back of some big event. But I’m noteless. I guess I’m lazy. Well, I’m not so much a person who deals with facts as much as feelings.
Blondie recently picked up this year’s Godlike Genius award at the NME Awards 2014, sponsored by Austin, Texas last month. The legendary band also played a set at the event, performing a host of classics including ‘Call Me’, ‘One Way Or Another’ and ‘Heart Of Glass’ alongside a cover of Beastie Boys track ‘(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)’.
The band were presented with the award by winner of the Best Solo Artist category Lily Allen and followed with a tongue-in-cheek speech. “Hey hey! Thank you NME. I’m very happy to be here tonight,” began Harry before guitarist Chris Stein added: “Thank you guys. Back in the old days, we had an adversarial relationship with NME. They used to rake us over the coals. But Karl Marx once told me there’s no such thing as bad publicity.”
In the Stylist interview, Harry then went on to comment on receiving the accolade, saying, “Doing interviews, getting the award forces you to deal with your history so to speak – it might give me some kind of way of dealing with the present. But I like moving ahead. I like change, I like new things. It’s good to escape. I have an adventurous spirit.”
Previous winners of the Godlike Genius award, meanwhile, have included Johnny Marr, Noel Gallagher and The Cure.
