She was one of the most recognisable female singers of the Eighties thanks to her punk attitude and distinctive features.
And it was her iconic style that made Debbie Harry the subject of many an artist’s paintbrush during her career with New Wave band Blondie.
Twenty years on, and she is still being immortalised on canvas, as proven by a presentation in Dublin by fan and local artist Peter Rees.
Miss Harry, who turns 65 next week, was handed a new painting by Mr Rees which depicted her at the height of her fame.
The graphic image, which had been altered to represent her in just white, black and grey, showed the Rapture singer pulling her trademark pout.
As she posed for a photograph while holding the painting, Debbie seemed to recreate that familiar pursing of the lips.
The most famous and enduring image of the Blondie star was painted by pop artist, and friend of Miss Harry, Andy Warhol.
In black and white, like Peter Rees’ image, the iconic painting highlighted Miss Harry’s bright red lips for which she was well known.
The star and her band reformed in 1997 and are currently in Dublin performing Blondie Live at the Vicar Street theatre.
A review of the gig criticised Harry’s lack of enthusiasm during the performance.
Eamon Sweeney, of the Irish Independent said: ‘Maybe one shouldn’t read too much into a single performance, but it’s disappointing to observe that Blondie appear to have turned into a heritage act without a heart.
‘Nostalgic cabaret might be fun, but they really should be a lot more than that.’
