DEBBIE HARRY
As one of the first female lead singers in a male-dominated punk scene, Debbie Harry paved the way for fashion-fab femmes fatales. She and boyfriend Chris Stein formed Blondie in 1973 – named after the ‘Hey blondie, give us a smile!’ catcalls Debbie got on the streets of New York. It took four years for their first hit, but they became one of the world’s most successful New Wave bands, thanks to Debbie’s take-no-prisoners attitude as much as her talent and style. She has also appeared in cult movies like Videorome and Hairspray.
Signature style – Embodying the pre-punk, post disco spirit of downtown NYC, Debbie was known for her bright blonde hair and tough glamour. Lashings of lipgloss, a flick and sunglasses hiding heavily kohled eyes defined the look. The clothes were deeply sexy – from figure-hugging Spandex catsuits to ripped-up jeans.
Daytime essentials – Skinny jeans, rock tees, sunglasses and black kohl pencil.
Night-time essentials – Slinky jersey dresses, miniskirts, lipgloss and bleached hair.
