SINGLES REVIEWED BY EVERETT TRUE
SINGLE OF THE WEEK
DEBORAH HARRY & IGGY POP
WELL, DID YOU EVAH! (Chrysalis)
YOU’VE heard this by now. Not just single of the week, of course, but one of the greatest cover versions ever recorded of one of the silver screen’s most memorable scenes (from “High Society”). Stylistically, musically, lovingly. For today, anyhow…
You want reasons? For the part where Iggy asks Debbie if she’s ever been up to LA recently and starts talking about his invitation to Pia Ziadora’s (the laugh! the laugh!). For the part where they start la-la-la-ing so dreadfully and delightfully out of tune. For the way Debbie sounds so sardonic, Iggy so sarcastic. For the way the original is treated with just the right amount of irreverence. For Chris Stein’s paint-scorching guitar sound. And for Alex Cox’s goddamn vid.
Gosh darn it: this is just like discovering musicals again for the first time.
